4K is the headline number on every streaming service, and for a meaningful share of households it delivers no visible benefit at all while causing real problems.
This article covers what 4K actually requires, when you will see the difference, and when Full HD is the better choice. We sell a service that carries 4K; we would still rather you ran the right tier than the highest one.
All four must be met. Missing any one means you are either not getting 4K or getting it badly.
Not your plan speed. Not your phone's speed next to the router. The speed a test app reports on the streaming device, in the room where it lives, during the evening.
Sustained matters more than peak. Video bitrate is variable, and a 4K sports broadcast spikes well above its average during fast motion. A connection that bursts to 60 Mbps and settles at 18 will stutter exactly when the picture matters most.

4K streams are encoded with HEVC, also called H.265, because at 4K resolution the older codec would need roughly double the bandwidth. HEVC is far more efficient and considerably harder to decode.
Devices with hardware HEVC decoding handle it effortlessly. Devices without it attempt to decode in software, which pins the processor, drops frames and in some cases produces green or garbled video.
Practically: a current streaming stick or box with 2 GB of RAM handles 4K well. A budget stick with 1 GB does not, regardless of what the box says. Our device guide covers which hardware clears the bar.
Check that hardware decoding is enabled in your player's settings. It usually is by default, but not always.
This is the requirement nobody mentions, and it is the one that most often makes 4K pointless.
Resolution only matters if your eye can resolve the extra pixels. That depends on screen size and how far away you sit.

A 43-inch television viewed from three metres, which is an extremely common Canadian living room arrangement, is past the point where 4K and Full HD are distinguishable. You are paying bandwidth for pixels your eye cannot resolve.
At 65 inches and above, from a normal sofa distance, the difference is real and visible.
Some feeds advertised as 4K are upscaled Full HD. Upscaling adds pixels without adding information, so the result carries a 4K bitrate cost for a Full HD amount of detail.
Genuine 4K sources look noticeably sharper on a large screen. Upscaled ones look like Full HD using four times the bandwidth.
The single most useful thing to understand about streaming video quality.
Resolution is the pixel count. Bitrate is how much information describes those pixels. A well-encoded Full HD stream at 10 Mbps routinely looks better than a starved 4K stream at 12 Mbps, particularly on fast motion, where a low bitrate produces blocky artefacts around anything moving quickly.
This is why a hockey broadcast is the hardest test of any streaming setup. Rapid motion, a small fast object and frequent scene changes all demand bitrate. A static news broadcast at the same resolution needs a fraction of it.
If you have to choose between resolution and bitrate, choose bitrate.
Genuinely, and we say this as a service that carries both.
If your screen is under 55 inches or you sit more than about two and a half metres away, the difference is not visible and you are spending bandwidth for nothing.
If your connection is marginal. A stable Full HD picture beats a stuttering 4K one every time. Nobody has ever enjoyed a buffering 4K stream more than a flawless Full HD one.
If you run multiple screens. Three 4K streams need 75 Mbps before any other household traffic. Three Full HD streams need 45. Our connections article covers how simultaneous streams add up.
If you are on a metered plan. 4K uses roughly 5 GB per hour against 2 GB for Full HD. Four hours a day is 600 GB a month versus 240.
If your device is older. Software HEVC decoding produces worse output than hardware Full HD decoding, plus fan noise and heat.
Three adjustments that improve the picture more than switching from Full HD to 4K on most setups.
Turn off motion smoothing. Manufacturers give it different names, and on live broadcast content it produces visible artefacting, particularly around fast-moving objects. This is the single biggest picture-quality improvement available on most Canadian living-room televisions, and it costs nothing.
Set the picture mode correctly. Filmmaker or Cinema mode for films and series, where accuracy matters. Standard for sport, where the extra brightness helps in a lit room.
Set the player buffer to three to five seconds. Not a picture setting, but the difference between a stream that holds through a fast sequence and one that stutters.
Straightforward and takes five minutes.
Play a fast-moving broadcast on the 4K variant of a channel. Watch for two minutes. Switch to the Full HD variant of the same channel and watch another two minutes.
If you cannot tell which is which from your normal seat, run Full HD permanently. You will get a more stable picture, use less data, and free up bandwidth for everyone else in the house.
If the difference is obvious, and on a large screen at a close distance it often is, run 4K and make sure your connection has the headroom for it.
